Ce dernier se retrouve exactement dans cette situation où se trouve souvent les témoins, et qui peut le mener auprès de sectes dites « ufologiques », c’est-à-dire une secte dont les croyances ont un objet ayant des liens avec le sujet ou mieux la « mythologie des extraterrestres ».
On peut classer ces sectes ufologiques en deux catégorie : la première est constituée des sectes bien établies, possédants des infrastructures physiques, une hiérarchie structurée, des dirigeants dont l’identité est connue, etc. Celles-ci, bien que possédant souvent une idéologie marginale, demeurent normalement dans un cadre qui est socialement et légalement acceptable. Leurs diverses actions tournent autour de la promotion de leurs croyances. La plus connue de ces sectes au Québec et probablement au monde est le mouvement Raëlien.
La seconde catégorie est plus inquiétante, on y retrouve des groupes restreints, dont l’identité des gourous demeure pratiquement toujours secrète, étant connu le plus souvent sous des pseudonymes. Leur lieu de rencontre est souvent des bâtiments résidentiels et des milieux extérieurs. Leurs membres peuvent être contraints à des actions ou des comportements contre leur gré. Aucune structure n’est présente et leur historique est difficilement vérifiable. Les principaux scandales ayant touchés des sectes ufologiques relèvent de groupes répondants à ces caractéristiques.
Ces deux catégories de sectes attirent les témoins de phénomènes insolites principalement pour deux raisons : 1) ils offrent une écoute exemplaire à ces derniers et, 2) leurs fournis des réponses ; leurs réponses. Ils comblent ainsi le vide laissé par les autres intervenants.

Les témoins sont parfaitement conscients de ce qu’ils ont vu et vécu. Il est inacceptable de réduire leur témoignage au rang de fabulations ou de quelques explications superficielles ou irréalistes. Toute explication insatisfaisante risque de les entrainer vers ces groupes marginaux. Mieux vaut l’absence d’explications et une écoute attentive que des élaborations auxquelles le témoin ne peut s’identifier.
